Sony A7s - 16-35mm zoom - An 'alternative' telephoto option

Sony A7s - 16-35mm zoom - An 'alternative' telephoto option
'For my Sony A7 cameras A7r / A7s, I'm pretty much sorted at the wide end, particularly with the 16-35mm zoom, which is a great lens. However, for telephoto shots I've nothing longer than the 100mm Nikon Series E, which is manual focus anyway. So I've come up with a radical solution. I take out out my ultra-small (size and sensor) Samsung Galaxy 2 compact camera, with it's 23-483mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens.'

L-Plate Grip for the Sony A7 FE cameras

L-Plate Grip for the Sony A7 FE cameras
'I do find some mirrorless interchangeable camera uncomfortable to work with over long periods of time. The desire on the part of the manufacturers to get them as small as possible often produces a mismatch between body and lens. One solution to this is a battery grip, with the bonus that I get more power, but I don't always want to use one of those either.'

The Film SLR lookalikes - Fuji X-T1 + 18-135mm zoom. Sony A7s Nikon 28-200mm zoom, Olympus OM-D E-M10 Nikon 100mm f/2.8 - three days of shooting
'Mirrorlesson fashions have dictated that 'lookaleicas' are on the way out and film SLS type designs are very much the order of the day. The Fuji X-T1, Olympus OM-D E-M10 and Sony A7s are examples of this. I've just had three days shooting with each and here's some pictures plus some comments on my experiences with each.'

Mirrorless Interchangable - Where Does It Go In 2015? Part 5 - SONY
'Sony have come some way since those first NEX cameras. One photographer I know said to me 'Who wants a camera that looks like a bar of soap!?' He's now using an A7r. The real 'game changer' had to be the NEX-7. '24MP on APS-C?? And you know it's actually decent quality.'

The absolutely amazing Sony A7s

The absolutely amazing Sony A7s
'It's not really that controversial for me to suggest that currently Sony FE cameras are the ones all the other manufacturers aspire to. Plus when you accept that they are far from perfect currently, Sony's competitors must be wondering what they have to do to even keep the FE cameras in sight as they ride off into the distance making everything else look pretty mediocre. One things for sure, overhyped and overdue firmware updates won't do the trick!!'

'However it did occur to me that my Sony A7s fitted with my Sony FE 35mm f2.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* Lens, might actually have some significant advantages over the Fuji. And for all the perceived social documentary, 'street photography' cred of the Fuji X100 'lookaleica' series, might not the Sony be better for that as well?'

'......Plus the possibilities of a fast wide-angle on the high resolution A7r and the low light high ISO capabilities of the lens on the A7r are tempting to say the least. With the FE cameras focus peaking, manual focusing isn't really a problem and for me this is a VERY useful lens for my FE cameras. '

SONY A7s compared to NIKON Df - HIGH ISO PERFORMANCE

SONY A7s compared to NIKON Df - HIGH ISO PERFORMANCE
'I'm still mightily impressed with the Df at lower ISO's and it does have an incredible dynamic range, but I'll leave that to another post. As far as the upper end of the ISO scale is concerned, then I have no hesitation in declaring the A7s the winner. It's not by a huge difference but it is there and it makes the camera incredibly useful for a variety of photographic situations. A superb camera capable of creating superb image files. And more than that a genuine advance on what's currently available. Something that can't be said for every camera release these days.'

"Thinking about those two things, I decided to see how my A7r compared to my A7s if I downsized the 36MP files to match the 12MP of the A7s. I decided to see how the two cameras sensors performed at what might be described as 'normal' high ISO settings. i.e. 1600-12800. The A7s will of course go higher, but there are few occasions when I'd even contemplate that. But within the range I indicated, there are many situations when using that ISO setting would be useful. Below is what I got using the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens."

My SONY FE system and Mix and Match lenses - Disadvantage? Or Creative Option?
"Over time this system will change and hopefully evolve into something better. But even if I stuck with what I have now, I wouldn't have much to complain about. Nothing is perfect however and for me the gear I use is far from ever being settled. I treat it very much as a work in progress and am under no illusions that I will ever find the perfect combination. However, that doesn't mean I don't have every intention of pursuing that."

WHAT THE SONY A7s OFFERS IN GOOD AND BAD LIGHT

WHAT THE SONY A7s OFFERS IN GOOD AND BAD LIGHT
"It's always struck me that mirrorless is a choice, in the main, for those who take their photography seriously and are interested in more than snapshots. And the A7s is a VERY serious camera. For me, it's the best all-round camera I've ever bought and used and it's the first camera I've never felt in some way inhibited by. I really do feel that I can go anywhere and shoot anything with it. It's a strange feeling, but I must say I think it's going to be addictive. "

SHOCK AND AWE - THE SIMPLY AMAZING SONY A7s
"No matter what you say about Sony, their appetite for innovation is undiminished. The low light capabilities of the A7s are such that it's done nothing less then redefine what, how and where I photograph. The pictures and video above were shot in terrible light, though they don't look like it. Most images and the bulk of the video footage was at ISO 12800 and they are surprisingly low on noise. Add in the fact that it's totally silent with it's electronic shutter and I have a very special camera. "

Sony A7s price

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/follow-live-sony-rx100m3-officially-announced/
Price of Sony A7s $2500. Plus of course if you want to record 4K you need an add-on recorder that will cost about the same. Maybe the people who decided this all bought shares in Panasonic. It's a lot of money to be able to shoot footage of a black cat down a coal mine. Not sure who exactly would choose this over the Panasonic GH4 unless VERY low light capability is required. Sony often get their pricing very right, sometimes they get it very wrong. This is the latter.

Nice comments on the Sony A7s

'But it’s equally exciting for still photographers as the A7s packs a mere 12 Megapixels into a full-frame sensor area, allowing it in theory to out-perform the Canon EOS 1Dx and Nikon D4s in terms of dynamic range and noise in low light. And all from a much smaller and lighter, not to mention cheaper body. Sure it doesn’t focus or shoot as fast, nor can you clobber someone over the head with it in a war zone, but if all you want is the maximum low light performance from the smallest or most affordable body, Sony now wants your business.'

'I love that Sony now offers three versions of the Alpha A7 with 36, 24 and now 12 Megapixels and I can imagine some owners of, say, the A7r complementing it with the A7s for the best in resolution, noise and video.'

From the estimable Gordon Laing over at CameraLabs.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Hang on..........

'nor can you clobber someone over the head with it in a war zone' Love it.
