'It therefore struck me as useful, for both myself and hopefully my audience to make some kind of assessment of how these cameras work for me, what I like and find useful and what I don't. So today I'm looking at the  Sony FE A7r.'

Sony FE lenses for A7/A7r/A7s - are they getting there?

Sony FE lenses for A7/A7r/A7s - are they getting there?
'Now this is of course a lens the like of which Sony don't make or will ever make. It has no IS, which makes it relatively light, and there are no headline grabbing features. It's just a basic, functional, simple lens that will probably continue turning out great pictures for years to come without ever having anyone discuss it on the photographic internet. For what I do it's VERY useful and those 36MP on the A7r are not compromised in the least by the performance of the lens. It is, by some distance, a better lens than the 28-70mm FE zoom and I suspect than the 24-70mm Zeiss FE zoom as well. And it begs the question, if I don't need AF, which in most cases I don't, why on earth should I / would I bother with the 'native' Sony FE lenses.'

Sony FE16-35mm f4 ZA OSS Vario-Tessar T* Lens - Wide-angles - creative tool and / or Photoshop opportunity?

Sony FE16-35mm f4 ZA OSS Vario-Tessar T* Lens - Wide-angles - creative tool and / or Photoshop opportunity?
'With the arrival yesterday of my Leica T 11-23mm zoom lens, I'm once again into the issue of wide-angle lenses and how much 'correction' I do to the files. Because optically, these lenses can prove the most challenging of all, particularly when, as these days, they come in the form of zooms. And while they can provide us with some dramatic results, anyone who has worked with them will know that of all the lenses we have at our disposal, these can be the ones that take up more of post production time than anything else.'

Mirrorless Interchangable - Where Does It Go In 2015? Part 5 - SONY
'Sony have come some way since those first NEX cameras. One photographer I know said to me 'Who wants a camera that looks like a bar of soap!?' He's now using an A7r. The real 'game changer' had to be the NEX-7. '24MP on APS-C?? And you know it's actually decent quality.'

'And all I ask from my gear is that it inspires me. My Nokia Lumia 1020 Camera Phone inspires me to record the world around me in a less formal and instinctive way, my Leica T (Typ 710) inspires me to emulate the masters of photography who have used that brand and my Sony A7r Camera plus Sony Zeiss Vario Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens inspires me to create the best landscape images I can.'

Sony A7r + 16-35mm + Iridient Developer. Medium-Format Quality?

Sony A7r + 16-35mm + Iridient Developer. Medium-Format Quality?
'In terms of my 'system' camera it's becoming clear that Sony FE has moved to the top of my list in terms of cameras I choose for my bread and butter work. The main reason for this being the quality of the files I can produce. And there really is nothing to beat the A7r, 16-35mm and Iridient Developer combination I am using at the moment.'

'......Plus the possibilities of a fast wide-angle on the high resolution A7r and the low light high ISO capabilities of the lens on the A7r are tempting to say the least. With the FE cameras focus peaking, manual focusing isn't really a problem and for me this is a VERY useful lens for my FE cameras. '

'.......because it's a lens that is going to earn me money and more importantly create images that I'm proud of. It's done that already on the first day I've owned it and I can't think of a more impressive debut performance from any lens I've bought. This is a good one.'

The SONY FE MIRRORLESS SYSTEM - Getting there for professionals?

The SONY FE MIRRORLESS SYSTEM - Getting there for professionals?
".....I'm beginning to think that they are actually on the verge of putting together a mirrorless camera / lens system that will eventually put every other mirrorless system in the shade for the professional market, which Sony have made clear they are actively courting. "

Cameras that produce 100MB+ files - SONY A7R, SIGMA DP2 QUATTRO, NOKIA LUMIA 10120 COMPARED

Cameras that produce 100MB+ files - SONY A7R, SIGMA DP2 QUATTRO, NOKIA LUMIA 10120 COMPARED
'I have three cameras that will output huge 100MB+ jpg. files. The Sony A7r with it's 36MP from a 35mm / 'Full-Frame' sensor, My Nokia Lumia 1020 Smartphone with 38MP from a 1/1.5" Micro Sensor and My Sigma DP2 Quattro with a whopping interpolated 39MP from it's APS-C Foveon three layer sensor. Now it should be a forgone conclusion as to which produces the best image quality, but this post examines what each camera actually produces rather than just making the usual photographic internet assumptions. '

Sony A7s compared to Sony A7r at high ISO settings + Full size resolution jpgs. to download

Sony A7s compared to Sony A7r at high ISO settings + Full size resolution jpgs. to download
"Thinking about those two things, I decided to see how my A7r compared to my A7s if I downsized the 36MP files to match the 12MP of the A7s. I decided to see how the two cameras sensors performed at what might be described as 'normal' high ISO settings. i.e. 1600-12800. The A7s will of course go higher, but there are few occasions when I'd even contemplate that. But within the range I indicated, there are many situations when using that ISO setting would be useful. Below is what I got using the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens."

My SONY FE system and Mix and Match lenses - Disadvantage? Or Creative Option?

My SONY FE system and Mix and Match lenses - Disadvantage? Or Creative Option?
"Over time this system will change and hopefully evolve into something better. But even if I stuck with what I have now, I wouldn't have much to complain about. Nothing is perfect however and for me the gear I use is far from ever being settled. I treat it very much as a work in progress and am under no illusions that I will ever find the perfect combination. However, that doesn't mean I don't have every intention of pursuing that."
