The extra pixels on the A7r is a sterner test for the 28-70mm zoom, but it continues to produce excellent results for me. More things are becoming clear. The 70mm end seems softer than the 28mm end, and the lens profile in Adobe Camera Raw does clean up the image quite nicely, but does loose some of the 'bite' of the Nikon primes I've been using. However despite that, it is a seriously useful lens.
All of these images were shot with the lens set at f/8. Unlike m4/3 or APS-C cameras there isn't a lot of depth-of-field available even at that aperture, so I'm having to make sure my compositions reflect that. For example, the shot of the bridge above looks like everything is in focus at this small size, but at full-resolution that's definitely not the case.
The OSS in the lens works well, but I don't want to push it too far unless I have to. Most of the images were shot around 1/60th to 1/100th. sec. shutter speeds and mostly at ISO 100, though there isn't really any great loss of quality up to ISO 400.
The jpgs. are also as good as before and there are some blow ups below so you can see what they look like.
I am adding some extra sharpening to these files, both raw and jpg., than I do with my Nikons, but then I would expect that. There are few zooms as sharp as prime lenses, and certainly not at this size and price. The images it produces on the FE cameras are however significantly superior to anything I can achieve from my m4/3 or Fuji X cameras. And of course it has to be remembered that this is achieved with a significantly higher pixel count.
