OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5 with Voigtlander 35mm and 75mm lenses

It was all looking nice and simple. OM-D and a few lenses that I have already. I would be able to get rid of all those adapters and manual focus lenses. Until that is I made the mistake of giving my Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Nokton lens a try.

Just exactly what is it that Olympus have done with this sensor? Have they weakened the AA filter yet again, does it even have one at all? These pictures are outrageously sharp. Sharper than anything I've got so far with my m4/3 lenses, sharper than the same lens on any of my Sony NEX cameras and sharper than anything I've got so far (admittedly with no Adobe Camera Raw support) from my Fuji X-Pro 1. So I then made the further mistake of trying my Voigtlander 75mm f/2.5 Heliar as well.

This was same. Again, really sharp images.

So much for a "rationalisation" of my lenses and the plan of not having all this money tied up with them. Now of course I start thinking about "If these lenses are this good then how good would such and such a lens be" I thought that I might have got over looking longingly at the Leica 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar (All £4000 worth of it!) but no I haven't.

To many this extra sharpness might not be that important, but alas for pixel peepers like me, I know its there now.

So not only have Olympus improved the high ISO performance, and increased the dynamic range with this sensor they also seem to have made the resolution better as well. I really have no idea as to why this is SO much better than previous m4/3 sensors. From the look of the files it is very recognisable as a Panasonic sensor, but it seems that these days its not just the piece of silicon that makes the difference. I've often been somewhat skeptical of claims that manufacturers make about their "processing engines" but not any more. Whatever magic Olympus have used on this, magic it is. These are not just some of the best results I've got from a m4/3 camera, they are some of the best results I've got from any camera. Astonishing.

Finally just to prove that its not just me - two more reviews from sites I have a lot of respect for.
