PIctures with the Sony NEX-5N and E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS

Sony NEX-5N 18-200mm

Its a big lens. (Understatement of the year!) It is everything that critics of the NEX system dislike. A disproportionately sized lens on a very small body. I would have said and thought much the same.

In reality it handles very well. Its not unknown for lenses to be larger and heavier than camera bodies. Sports and nature photographers cope with this all the time. I took to it quite easily. I'm used to DSLR's and fairly large zooms, so I've got into the habit of cradling the lens. I'm probably more comfortable with this than using very small cameras. I sometimes have problems in finding a way to hold them comfortably.

One review of the lens said that it was very similar in terms of size to other lenses of its type, and certainly thats what I found. Put the Panasonic 14-140mm on a GF2 or GF3 and its pretty much the same. Generally superzooms like this are pretty big.

Like all of the Sony NEX lenses, it feels and looks very well made indeed. There is no zoom barrel creep, and the zooming and focusing rings are very smooth. I was pretty impressed by the build quality, and it certainly seems like its designed to last.

In terms of image quality its performance is also typical of many lenses of this type. Not so great wide open or at its longest setting, but a pretty decent performer overall. It is of course, unbelievably useful, and saves having to take out a whole bag of lenses and be constantly changing them.

I now have three NEX lenses, and all of them are good solid performers. This myth has grown up that these e-mount lenses are somehow "sub-standard". The owners of other systems are quick to criticise them, often it seems without actually using them. I can't believe that I've got three unique, especially good samples, so I'm assuming that other 16mm f/2.8, 18-55mm zooms and this 18-200mm are the same quality. And that quality is generally excellent.

In a couple of earlier posts I did some tests on this:-

The 18-200mm is a very useful addition for me, though its very much going to be a good weather lens for landscape and location work, as its very slow at the telephoto end. The size doesn't bother me, and in terms of my most important consideration, when used on the NEX-5n its a relatively light outfit.
