Multi image stitching with Panasonic GH1 and Nikon 50mm f1.2 lens

As indicated in a previous post /soundimageplus/2010/06/gh1-nikon-50mm-f12.html I was keen to try out the GH1 with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens in a "real world" situation.Yesterday gave an opportunity to do so.

I wanted to see, with careful exposure, whether I could get high quality results from micro four thirds using this lens as a companion camera/lens combination to the Leica X1.

The results were very pleasing. By shooting multi images and combining them together using photomerge in photoshop I was able to obtain large, sharp, high resolution files. By deliberately exposing for the highlights I was able to prevent these burning out. This often resulted in some dark initial images but careful raw processing and post-production work resulted in files that were satisfactory in terms of noise.

Though not possible to see at this size the full-size images are very sharp. The lens is very special, one of, if not the very best lenses I've ever used. There have been numerous rave reviews about it in this blog, but its worth singing its praises one more time.

I was pleased that I was able to get such good results from the GH1 as I am still very committed to the micro four thirds system. Prior to these results that was possibly more from my heart than my head, as I find it a very attractive system. I'm still not convinced by the handling of the GH1 and for top quality results I have to be very careful with exposure and processing, but overall it is a pleasing system to work with.

The sensor is capable of excellent resolution, with the right lenses, though I still feel that Panasonic do need to work on the dynamic range and squeeze a few more mega pixels out of their creation. However it is still early days and the results coming from the APS-C cameras such as the X1, Samsung NX10 and Sony NEX system should give them the incentive to keep on innovating.
